Used for over 2,000 years, ollas are microporous ceramic jars that are buried in the ground and traditionally used in market gardens, kitchen gardens or ornamental gardens.
They can also be used indoors, by placing them in the pots of houseplants. In this case, they are more commonly referred to as oyas for planting.
The technical principle is simple: to automate and optimise watering by gradually releasing a set amount of water.
Simply bury your ollas in the soil and refill them with water approximately every 4 to 6 days.
The technical workings of oyas
How does the water flow?
Clay is naturally a material that tends to retain, absorb and release water. This characteristic is partly what gives it its elasticity and allows potters to shape all kinds of objects.
To give it its final appearance, it must be fired. This tightens the pores of the clay.
The whole subtlety of ollas is that they are fired at a very precise temperature, making them solid while leaving the pores slightly open so they can allow the right amount of water to pass through.
Installation and maintenance of oyas
Once your olla is in place, your plants will naturally develop their roots in contact with the clay, working in symbiosis to draw out the water they need naturally.
To install an olla, simply dig a hole in the soil of your pot, bury the porous part of the olla, then fill it with water.
Check the water level every 4 to 6 days and top it up as needed. Maintenance is simple and requires very little effort.
